live from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. strak 1 man did not survive a second shooting. his job came to his rescue the second time -- first time, his dog was killed on site. jimmy martinez will -- and unhappy customer might've gotten to heated. we talk to the victim neighbors about what happened. >> earlier this month, this homeless man credited his dog for saving his life.>> it was up with the dog, would not be here. i would not be here at all. >> he did not survive a second shooting last night. oakland police say a 9:30 someone shot jimmy martinez outside of his rv after an

argument. it was parked near the corner of 85th avenue and enterprise way in -- in east oakland. people living in nearby rvs heard the shot. >> i heard like 10 shots. >> the dog was locked in the house. couldn't get out to help. >> they were still recovering from the december 4 shooting. a truck driver shot him in the hand over a parking space. this dog -- his dog charged at the trucker and was shot in the nose. >> it was a -- if it was not for the dog i would not be standing here talking to you. i would be in a funeral home for my brother.>> it does not appear that the 2 shootings were connected. jimmy worked as a mechanic fixing people's cars on the streets. a few hours before the shooting witness says, the customer blamed jimmy for a bad repair job. and demanded a refund.>> they had a little argument, confrontation. for about 5 to 10 minutes. and any other gentleman drove

off.>> people are looking for that customer, they are also checking out other leads. for now the dog is staying with jimmy sister. she tells me that the dog was crying all night. in oakland, kpix5 . all is well for san francisco's pier 39. there was a possible terror attack there. we spotted a few uniform officers on a patrol any coast guard helicopter overhead. a modesto man charged 26-year- old -- they were posing as isis affiliate said heat -- he chose pier 39 because it would be crowded.>> when you don't come out to these places, and you are fearful, they have taken away what we are fighting for which is our freedom. so we brought our granddaughters out here so we can have a good time over christmas. and come to pier 39.>> according to an affidavit the suspect told the suspect and told him he did not need a

passed up with families focus on necessities and replacing items lost in the fires.>> charities have been collecting toys and resins for low income children. today was a giveaway. volunteers passed out more than 7500 toys and bikes, is the second year the sonoma county sheriff's office have partnered with local charities. as you can imagine because of the wildfires, it gave the community another reason to give back.>> we want to make people happy, that's what this is about. they lost a lot, it's time for them to get something back and we will take care of them.>> organizers stayed the donations for today's event were overwhelming. they started coming in on the first day of the fire. hundreds of people were -- kids were able to get new toys and bikes. in all 400 kids got a new set of wheels and were able to pick out a favorite toy. santa and his elves were also there to help spread holiday cheer. >> i feel good because i have

new toys now. to play with.>> a lot of these people come from our inner-city projects. inner-city areas in san francisco. and they are excited. they are so happy to win. >> all of the bikes and toys were generously donated to the program. this world war ii veteran lost his home in the wine country wildfires, tonight, a surprise. how he regained a piece of his past. plus a charity that has come up with an idea in shopping malls to help the homeless get back on their feet.

>> reporter: there has not been many laughs or smiles for charles. since last october, sonoma county fire storm. the flames that tore apart so many lives and memories, took a direct aim at cheers mementos that he helped year. his world war ii uniform and metals and survived enemies attack and days of despair proved to be no match for the inferno that raced up the hell -- hill of the wine country. charles was given this replacement uniform and replica metals.>> we were with great pride.>> it was a great pride that people >> -- stepped up to make this moment happen. it started with a message from charles's daughter, two marine -- to retired marine. >> she said listen my father lost his home in the fire, and

we can't replace the stuff we don't know how. i said listen i will try to help the best way i can. it will not be an easy task at all.>> -- marines do not step aside for assignments. >> he found some metals. but the uniform was a bit tougher.>> there was only 2 of them out there. only 1 was original to 1942. talk a few phone calls later, they made it happen. >> i was able to get the uniform i was looking for which is an original world war ii, 1942 inside. and we got it out in time.>> in time to give this world war ii vet a renewed sense of pride that was only singed by the fire storm. now, it stands tall once again.>> thank you all for coming. what a surprise.>> clear and -- [cheering] >> charles green celebrated his 92nd birthday before the fires broke out. jobless rate in the bay area

are at a historic low. in the san francisco and san mateo area was at 2.2% for unemployment. the lowest on record. the east bay's rate was 3.1% in santa clara county 2.7%. both of those numbers are the lowest in 18 years. they say the bay area economy added 16,000 jobs last month.>> -- if you ordered or received anything from amazon it may have been handled by special group of seasonal employees. they are retirees or others who live in mobile homes clustered near certain amazon warehouses. they work just during the busy holiday season, and then move on.>> i thought it would be more robotic, i did not know was going to be human. typical 10 hour shift. workers salary start at $10.75 an hour and includes free rv parking space. is the most wonderful time of the year. according to the song. all the stresses of christmas also mean it's the number one week for heart attacks. cardiologist say that heart problems are much more common at christmas time. there's plenty that we can do to avoid a trip to the hospital. set aside time for yourself to exercise, stay on your medications, and don't over indulge. there's a novel way to feed and clothe the homeless. we have the story from nottingham england. many people never seen them but the streets of nottingham england are filled with homeless people.>> 5-6 hours without water. i've nothing to eat or drink.>> the charity action hunger is hoping to change people like 43- year-old lee jordan.

is one of the first to use the machine for the homeless. it provides up to 100 people for -- with chips and chocolate bars as well as healthy foods and warm clothing. >> there all good products that someone on the streets can use.>> the uk's first vending machine will be open 24 hours a day. they will be able to access with a special key card and it is popular so far. the charity works with shelters to choose who gets a card. each can be used three times and people can ask for another. the activist -- and activist that is in charge give them -- says it gives them a chance to handle themselves.>> they are generally disbelieving, and they ãand we have brought tears to people's eyes.>> they are planning to roll out more vending machines next year. cbs news, nottingham, england. back to the bay area where tonight a beautiful sunset on this christmas eva, eve. this is a sight -- side of our
